How long does installation take?
Tankless Water Heater Installation
Tankless water heaters are the latest innovation in energy-saving water heating systems. They are ideal for single-family homes, granny flats, and vacation rentals, and homeowners in San Diego are switching to tankless systems at a growing rate. If you already know which tankless model is best suited for your home, you may be wondering what the tankless water heater installation process looks like.
Unless you’re pretty handy with a reciprocating saw (a what?) you’ll probably want to have your unit professionally installed. A professional installation company typically offers same-day installation. On the whole, installation takes three to four hours from start to finish. Here’s a general idea of the tankless water heater installation process.
The Installation Process
A trained technician will meet with you on-site to discuss what arrangements will need to be made if any. This could include determining which exit to use to haul your old tank outside, choosing a location where your new tankless unit will reside, and evaluating your tankless unit’s individual housing requirements.
Upon confirmation of the unit’s new location, work can begin. The first step is to get that old tank heater out of the way. To do this, the remaining water will need to be drained. Typically, this process can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. While the tank is draining, the technician will prepare the unit and isolation valves and assemble the vent system. The technician will remove the roof exhaust if required. Finally, the technician will retrofit gas and water lines if necessary.
When the old tank is empty, it can be taken outside for removal. Any respectable company will usually offer removal at little or no cost.
Mounting a Tankless Water Heater
The next step is to locate studs in the wall for mounting purposes. If no studs are available, the technician can build a wooden mounting brace. Fortunately, the heaviest tankless models weigh a maximum of just over 100 lbs., so they’re not insanely difficult to mount.
In addition, your tankless water heater will come equipped with a thermostat, which will also need installation. Learn more about a smart thermostat’s wi-fi capabilities here.
After Installation
Your unit is almost ready to go!
After installation, clean-up protocol includes sealing any openings around the unit and exhaust. Technicians will clear debris from the floor, sweep up, and reveal your brand new wall unit.
One of the benefits of going tankless is that you’ll now have a lot of extra space where your old tank used to stand, and what you do with that space is up to you. How about more storage for holiday decorations, or a place to store camping gear over the winter? The possibilities are endless.
Finally, refer to your user’s manual to learn the ins and outs of your new tankless trophy. That’s basically all there is to it. You can start enjoying long-lasting hot water showers immediately after install. What’s more, you can expect greater savings on your energy bills in the future.
