Is raw water good for you? We don’t think so.

Apr 25, 2022

It’s a beautiful day and you’re hiking in the mountains when you come across a babbling brook and think, “that water looks fresh enough to drink.”  But is it?

The Raw Water Trend

Drinking untreated, unfiltered “raw” water is apparently a trend in some circles, according to the New York Times. Proponents say that “raw” spring water has beneficial minerals and that it has no chemicals like fluoride. Nor does it move through lead pipes. However, while this is true, the water could still have chemicals from pesticides and bacteria. It may also contain animal poop!

But Is Tap Water Safe?

Because of the germs found in raw water sources like rivers and lakes, many public water districts add disinfectants to the water to combat contamination – usually chlorine or chloramine. Water treatment removes bacteria, parasites, pesticides, and other contaminants. Drinking untreated water is not a good idea – unless you like giardia or dysentery!

Water disinfection has been very successful and has been lauded as one of the great public health achievements. It is the reason that tap water in the United States is relatively clear of waterborne germs. However, it is not a perfect system.

Disinfectants like chlorine and chloramine can react with naturally-occurring organic matter in water, creating disinfection by-products (DBPs) that are potentially harmful to one’s health. Chlorine can create taste and smell issues depending on the water quality and amount of chlorine in the water.  It is also true that the United States has issues with its public water systems because of its aging infrastructure. You may not want to drink what’s in the pipes that water passes through on the way to your home or office.

Your Clean Water Solution – Raw is Not Better

So how can you be sure that the water you drink is healthy for your body? The only way to be 100% worry-free is to install a water filtration system.

Whole-house water filtration systems purify water with a charcoal or charcoal coconut cleansing process. (Yes, coconut shells are used making this method the most renewable!) Water passes through activated carbon granules. Then, impurities are trapped in these small spaces through absorption. Chemical contaminants trapped in this stage include chlorine, fluoride, pesticides, solvents, and heavy metals so only clean water flows into your house.

Whole-house water filtration systems may be installed in a matter of hours. They’re small and easily mounted next to your home’s other plumbing-related fixtures.
