Eliminating Myths About Tankless Water Heaters
Myth: A widely held but false belief or idea.
Ever since our ancestors began living in complex societies, people have had to figure out who to trust and what not to believe. But in the 21st century, fact-checking has become a skill to hone. It is especially important to have all the facts before purchasing a big-ticket item for your home.
In this blog, we’ll examine a few common myths regarding tankless water heaters in order to get to the bottom of some misconceptions floating around out there (excuse the pun)!
Common Myths About Tankless Water Heaters
Myth #1: Tankless water heaters are expensive to operate.
Many people believe that tankless water heaters are more expensive to operate than traditional tank water heaters. The truth is that they are less expensive. A tankless heater can save at least 20 percent of your energy bill. Because a tankless water heater does not store hot water, you are not paying additional money to keep water heated all the time as you do for traditional tank heaters. In addition, tankless water heaters have a longer service life than traditional tank models – lasting up to 20 years.
Myth #2: Tankless heaters will not supply constant hot water.
Many people think that because tankless water heaters do not store hot water, that it will take time for the water to get to the desired temperature. But this is not true. Here’s how it works: When a hot water tap is turned on, cold water travels through a pipe into the unit. Either a gas burner or electric element heats the water. As a result, tankless heaters consistently deliver hot water. Though traditional tank units store water, once that water is used it can take 30 minutes or more to reheat new water.
Myth #3: Tankless water heaters deliver hot water instantly.
Tankless water heaters do not deliver instantaneous hot water. They are quick at supplying hot water on demand, but it really depends on how far your tankless water heater is from the faucet. The solution? A recirculating pump periodically circulates water back to the water heater to be reheated. This prevents water in the pipe from cooling off thus providing instant hot water when you turn on the tap or shower.
Myth #4: Tankless water heaters don’t provide enough water flow for more than one person taking a shower.
When it comes to tankless water heaters, size matters! If the water heater is too small, you may not be able to run more than one shower at a time without someone getting a blast of cold water. If the heater is too large, you could end up paying more than you need to upfront. Fortunately, one of our jobs is to help you figure this out!
Myth #5: Tankless water heaters require spending additional money on annual inspections.
There is no annual inspection required. However, just like any other major appliance, some preventative maintenance goes a long way toward ensuring problem-free operation – just as is recommended for traditional heaters. We highly recommend an annual descaling of the heater so your tankless heater can maintain its efficiency.
